Our profound thanks again to this wonderful synagogue for hosting our art work on an on-going basis.

A new exhibit goes up in February and will feature the work of three or four other ORA members.

I forgot to take pictures and caught this shot just before we left the gathering. It's just a few of our members listening to a brief presentation by one of our other members!

First a little business, then a demo of how we do critique groups and finally we took a speedy gallery walk - a slightly more sophisticated version of grade school "show and tell"!

Lots of ooh's and ahhh's at the sample pieces everyone brought in.

Unterspan Juries Into New Gallery Show

Diana Unterspan, one of our Exhibiting Artists, has been chosen by a jury to exhibit three of her pieces in a 7-week gallery show at Art on Broadway in Beaverton. The exhibit, titled "Romance," begins with an opening reception on Thursday, January 12th from 6-9 pm.

Diana had two of her pieces on exhibit at this same gallery last month, as part of our ORA exhibit. This new show was open to all artists. We are very proud of Diana, and hope you can come by and see all the works of art.

Art on Broadway is a gallery in downtown Beaverton. Several ORA artists juried in to a one month show which will be up the entire month of December.

This is a beautiful little gallery representing numerous artists. Each month they rent a portion of the gallery to an art group. ORA was delighted to be invited! This morning we delivered our art and their co-op members juried our work. Selected items will be hung/displayed and all are available for sale!

The new show opens December 3rd.....and December 10th is the reception, from 6-9 and we hope our friends will come celebrate ... shop for art!

ART Enhances the synagogue experience!

Hiddur Mitzvah is all about beautifying a ceremonial object or a ritual. ORA is pleased to continue exhibiting a few artists at a time in the foyer of the main sanctuary at Neveh Shalom.

This opportunity allows us to fill the lobby will color and light. It gives congregants an opportunity to look at art, meet artists and talk about some of the questions we always wrestle with. WHAT MAKES ART JEWISH? Is it the theme of the art, the religion of the artist?...well, you get the picture!

The second Friday night of each month features a service called ORA Shalom....a Shabbat for the senses. We are so pleased to be a part of this monthly event that allows all of us to redefine our spirituality in various ways.

Diane Fredgant and Esther Liberman

One of the major questions we always seem to wrestle with is.....Is it fine art or is it fine craft? In the case of these two artists the answer is a definitive...."YES!"

Diane creates stunning paintings on silk that in many ways are her personal prayers. Her deep study of text opens her to spiritual visions that express a joyful heart. Silk is a demanding medium requiring great care. A single error can ruin yards of precious fabric, but in DIane's capable hands, the cloth is transformed in a magically spiritual creation.

Esther works in beads....hundreds and thousands of tiny beads. She works with needle, thread and high quality beads in a quiet and meditative fashion. It isn't just her choice of beads and color....it is the way these beads transcend their individual forms to become part of an intricate spiritual message. Amulets, memorial candle holders, bracelets, and ritual head coverings speak of love and spirit.

Leslie Elder and Emunah Noa !

GLENN DECHERD (below) managed to evade the camera but his pottery captivated his customers! This was Glenn's first CoA as well!

ORA SHALOM and FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE- 9/12/11

A very special night of music, art, and spirituality comes to SW Portland tomorrow night at 7:30 !

Neveh Shalom will play host to the instrumental music of Klezmocracy and the remarkable vocal stylings of Cantor Deborah Bletstein.

This will be the second time we have had Friday Night Live....and if it is anything like the one last spring, it will be a rocking night!

ORA artists Jan Katz, Esther Liberman , Eddy Shuldman, and Diana Unterspan will have their art work on display in the lobby and will be present to talk with folks right after services.

It will be a beautiful evening...the music will breathe fresh life into our liturgy. The traditional music is beautiful but when we mix it up once in while , the prayers take on new meaning and new life. Put that together with beautiful art and you have a magical evening.

The art will remain on display for the next few months....come to shul! it will be special!

The artists:

Jan Katz paints stunning acrylic paintings ...portraits, landscapes and abstracts- all tell stories in vibrant color and motion!

Esther Liberman brings beads to life in her spiritual interpretations of ritual objects like kippot and yahrzeit candles. Her jewelry is breath-taking.

Eddy Shuldman loves glass and frequently uses it as a way to express her studies of Jewish texts. The lobby exhibit features four Torah adornments/breast plates.

Diana Unterspan works with fibers in various forms. Felting and other interesting techniques lend a poetic quality to her work. She creates intriguing abstracts...several framed examples are on display...and she also makes women's hats (not on display).

Laurie Fendel, Sabina Wohfeiler and Barbara Berger are our featured artists today.

Barbara uses her camera to transform the "every day" experience into something unique. She helps the viewer see what she sees. Remarkable!

Sabina is well known for her watercolors but has recently explored the possibilities of pastels. Nature inspires her art and the results are stunning. Customers raved to us about her work and about meeting her!

Laurie has redefined fabric sculpture. Mystical, spiritual, and colorful....her designs inspire!

Pictured here is a commissioned piece that tooks months of designing, cutting and sewing.

He holds a Bachelors in Music from Portland State University, with graduate studies under local guitar great Jerry Hahn. His main focus is jazz guitar.

EDDY SHULDMAN, our Shining Light

The final artist in this series is our founder and guiding light, Eddy Shuldman. Working with fused glass, Eddy is always exploring new ideas and inspirations, asking questions and proposing new answers. Never afraid to try something new, she pushes the limitations of glass, as well as her imagination. Her beautiful creations grace the homes of many Portlanders, and places far across the world as well.

Eddy is an idea person. ORA was her idea, and so was Jewish Arts Month (JAM). She has a special ability to excite other people with her ideas, and find ways to make them reality. She pushes our members and guest artists to dream bigger and achieve more. Through the force of her energy and enthusiasm, ORA has grown from a vague idea to a well-known organization.

ORA welcomes Sharon back to Celebration of Art....this time as a member! We are so proud she has chosen us! Her quilts have received rave reviews - you will find yourself looking at her work and asking the question "That's a quilt?" because her work is so painting-like!

The quilt pictured here is called "Raindrops Over Hime Shime" and is based on a photograph Sharon took while traveling in Japan.

First time guest Glenn Decherd works in clay almost daily. ORA fiRst became acquainted with Glenn's clay talents at the Community Warehouse CHAIR AFFAIR FUNDRAISING EVENT.

He has been donating his artwork to this remarkable community institution for years!

We are so pleased that Glenn decided to bring his wares to a sales venue...and that he chose us!

Laura Joy- festive fabric

As a founding member of ORA, Laura Joy has been exploring the possibilities of fabric constructions. This body of artwork transforms her spiritual journey into a fabric of metaphors. There are layers and textures and meaning stitched into each vessel, banner and quilt.

A student and teacher of Mussar, Laura Joy explores her Jewish spirituality through the practice of middot or intentions. Her artwork is often the result of her meditations.

Diane introduced herself to us at an Art Spark event last spring. We raced home to look at her website and immediately extended an invitation to her.

Diane specializes in portraits. She has a keen eye- not only does she capture a remarkable likeness of her subjects, but also their neshama...yiddish for soul. ORA is pleased to welcome Janice Katz, one of our newest members! She began painting seriously about 15 years ago. Working from her home studio in Portland, Oregon she uses primarily acrylics. Her genres include portraits, abstracts and cityscapes.

Jan's work always seems to tell a story. One of her newest series features scenes in a subway. These remarkable paintings bring a vibrancy to what many experience as an everyday occurrence. Many of us who live on the west coast have a notion that subways carry crowded masses in a dark train. Janice's paintings bring humanity forward enabling us to share in an intimate moment of subway life.

Touch Drawing Opens the Artist to New Places

ORA artists and guests gathered this afternoon to explore Touch Drawing. Led by artist Shemaya Blauer, we used brayers to spread ink on boards, layered on tissue paper, closed our eyes and drew. Shapes formed beneath finger tips, palms and even elbows. Evocative patterns emerged while blocked channels opened.

This was a special opportunity to explore what was hidden beneath the surface and a new process was explored! Fun? ... yes! Inspiring? .... definitely! Messy? Absolutely!

Thank you Shemaya for a great session....and our gratitude as well to Neveh Shalom for providing us with a marvelous space to do our soul work.

Our Latest Exhibit

You know how, after awhile, exhibits kind of look the same? Well, in this case, it doesn't! We all dropped off our artwork at Neveh Shalom and departed. Then our two curators too over and created a completely new exhibit in about an hour. When we came back to pick up whatever they didn't use, it was amazing! The new show looks so very different... and really beautiful!

This exhibit includes the work of: Shemaya Blauer, Leslie Elder, Laura Joy Fendel, Diane Fredgant, Esther Liberman, Sharon Segal, Ellen Shefi, Eddy Shuldman, Diana Unterspan, and Sabina Wohlfeiler.

Kudos to Laurie Fendel and Sabina Wohlfeiler for doing such a great job with this.

Everyone should come by and take a look. This exhibit will be up until late October, in the lobby of the main entrance of Neveh Shalom. Nothing's for sale... just come and enjoy.

Sweet Struggle

Sometimes I ask myself, "Why bother stepping out of my artistic comfort zone? Why not just continue to develop my voice using the imagery and materials that suit me best (intimate views/ watercolor)?" Whenever I'm in the grip of that sweet struggle of bumping up against artistic brick walls, as I was a week ago, I revisit these questions.

It had been almost a decade since I last took a workshop at Menucha, offered by the Creative Arts Community (now in their 46th year of operation). That one was welding, and I was WAY out of my comfort zone, jumping and screaming every time I turned on the tanks. (I did, however, produce two sculptural pieces that I adore!)

This time I set myself a dual challenge: learn to use pastels successfully, and conquer my frustration with landscapes (what do I include in the composition? what do I edit out?). I knew that Marla Baggetta , a master pastel artist with a gentle spirit, would be the perfect guide. And the beautiful gorge setting at Menucha would provide more than enough inspiration. So I was ready!

However, four of the five days were exercises in frustration! Marla's demos were wonderful, the weather superb, the classmates supportive, and yet I could not produce anything of worth. Finally, on the fifth day, I got it! I worked small, on toned paper, and merely suggested forms. Marla walked by, liked what she saw, and made sure I stopped! "Go on to another one!", she insisted. At the end of the day, I had FIVE successful pieces!

Was it worth it? Most definitely. I'm so pleased to look at these pieces and savor the success of meeting my goals, however painful it was to get there!!

KLEZMOCRACY is Back!

The Fine musicians of Klezmocracy are about to release a new CD!

They rocked the house during JAM last month and then they filled the Neveh Shalom Sanctuary with amazing sound when they played back up for Cantor Debbie Bletstein last Friday night . There was Ruach in the house as our Cantor brought the congregation and prayer to new heights!

ORA artists were in attendance and rumor has it that our art was dancing in the lobby during the service!

We love these guys and want to support them.....so why not join us at their release party. Youll hear some of the best Klezmer....ever!

What's In A Name?

It was my job to print up labels for our new "Gateways" exhibit at Neveh Shalom. Each artist sent me the titles of the works they were submitting, as well as the medium, and perhaps a brief explanation of the connection between the work and the Gateways theme. It was a most interesting process, because I was not seeing the actual works. My imagination was going a little crazy, trying to imagine what these pieces might look like.

Consider this example. Leslie Elder had a piece called "Smoothing Out The Wrinkles." I knew it was a watercolor painting, but had no idea what it looked like. Her info talked about the "Eyshet Chayil" blessing, and how a husband's reputation is partly based on the good deeds of his wife. I couldn't imagine what it might look like!

So it was with great curiosity that I showed up on Monday for the set-up of this exhibit. I looked for Sharon Segal's "Separate But Equal???" and Laura Joy's "Doorways of Choice", Ellen Shefi's "Ice Puddle" and Shemaya Blauer's "Releasing What Is Known." And I looked for Leslie's 3 pieces.

In each case, I was blown away! This is such a powerful gathering of theme-based works! I think I'm not going to tell you what Leslie's painting looks like, because you have to see it for yourself. When you see the three paintings together, and read her thoughts on them, you may experience the exquisite lump-in-the-throat that I did.

You will get goose bumps when you see Laura Joy's fabric sculpture, and you will feel the most beautiful serenity looking at Eddy Shuldman's "Wanderings" Seder Plate juxtaposed with Diane Fredgant's painted silk wall hanging "L'Dor vaDor." You will recognize the family history behind Barbara Berger's two gateway photos. And much more.

The exhibit is on display through the end of May. Come to services, or any activity, or just drop by during the day and ring the buzzer to be let in. You'll be glad you did!

Proof of the Pudding

This is the final week in our rotating series of ORA art exhibits in the MJCC lobby. The current selection of works will be coming down tomorrow afternoon. So, if you haven't come by this week, HURRY!

This has been a fascinating experience. Every Sunday we've put up a new exhibit, and every Friday we've taken it down. It required a great amount of organization, cooperation, and flexibility. In some ways, I found it exhausting. But the response within the Community has been remarkable. Everywhere I go, people are asking "how is Jewish Arts Month going?" and they often add that they loved the exhibits in the lobby. So I guess the proof of the pudding is in the.... lobby!

Art Spark Was Awesome!

This evening ORA hosted RACC's "Art Spark" program, and it was amazing! So many people showed up, mostly NOT from our usual support group. So it was wonderful to meet and chat with so many new people. And the Urban Farmer restaurant was just tooooo cool! If you ever want to impress out-0f-town guests, this is the place! Or just go there for the sheer pleasure of it.

Our congratulations go particularly to Sabina Wohlfeiler for making this happen, from start to finish. It was a glorious success for us, and I think it will yield some new members. Sabina, great job!!

Art Spark March 17th!!

I hope you will be able to join us tomorrow as ORA hosts this month's Art Spark gathering.

What is Art Spark? It's a program of the Regional Arts & Crafts Council (RACC) to promote art in Portland. It's described by RACC as "a bi-monthly mingling for artists of all sorts to meet, discuss, blather, applaud and plot the growth of art in Portland." Each meeting is hosted by a different group, at a different restaurant, club, or bar.

This is a big coup for our group, and I hope lots of our friends will turn out to support us and have a good time. Each of the ORA artists will have one or two works on display, and Eddy and I will each do a very brief address, around 6 pm. The rest of the time is for schmoozing, networking, drinking, and socializing.

There will be raffle prizes, and a no-host bar all evening. Admission is free.

Great news! The Calendar web page for this year's Jewish Arts Month (JAM) is done! Of course, the word 'done' is a fantasy, since this festival continues to grow and evolve, right up to the end. So i will continue to add events and update information, but the major part of the work is done. Phew!

And now is a good time to remind our readers about this amazing festival of arts - music, poetry, theater, visual arts, film, literature, photography and workshops. Special presentations by masters and amateurs, children and seniors, and everyone in between! Events are taking place all over Greater Portland, including some venues that might suprise you! This festival is so big, it can't begin to fit into one 'month.' So it spreads out over a period from February through early May. There's something for everyone, and for every schedule. And of course, plenty of exhibits and new work from ORA artists!

The Regional Arts and Culture Council will feature ORA at their March Art Spark Event.

If you've never attended one of these, this is a great time to come out and see what it's all about!

Art Spark is an opportunity to meet artists, network, and in this case....get to know ORA artists better! We'll have some work on display ...but we won't be selling any art! There will be a no host bar, and you'll also be able to check out a very cool restaurant.

And while you're there, go through the doors toward Stampfer Chapel to see the beautiful portrait of Rabbi and Goldie Stampfer that Susan Kuznitzky painted and donated to the synagogue.

Rabbis Isaak and Greenstein are warmly embracing this exibit program, and are working on a program of "Grand Openings" for our future installments. Ellen Shefi of ELF Studios has a 3 month exhibit, January 18th-April 19th, 2011, of her artwork at the Providence Milwaukie Hospital lobby gallery, located at
10150 SE 32nd Ave. Milwaukie, OR 97222 ( on Dwyer Drive).

She is participating in the Clackamas County Arts Alliance program.
Although her artwork consists of photography and photopainting, this gallery exhibit is solely photopainting, mostly from Italy. The art will transport you to another culture and evoke a lasting impression from the viewer.

Keeping the Flame Burning

What a great community!

I received a phone call from Chabad's Mimi Wilhelm. She wanted some guidance in planning a women's learning event focusing on Shabbat Candles. Maybe to make them, or decorate them, or something like that.

My own experience with wax and candles is NOT something you'd want to repeat, let alone share or pass on! So I put out a quick e-mail to our ORA membership asking for help.

Within a few hours I had replies from several people, with all kinds of helpful information, AND volunteering to help! I could hardly believe how easy it was. And, next thing I know, there's a photo in my email box of Sharon Segal following through with Mimi!

With All Her Heart

Sharon Segal has an exhibit of her latest paintings at her Doctor's office. It's a natural fit, because the paintings are mostly hearts, and this doctor is a cardiologist!

Sharon has spent a lot of time exploring the beauty of the shape we call a heart, and cleverly seques it into other related shapes as well. ORA Exhibits All Year Long!!

Following the success of our recent exhibit at Congregation Neveh Shalom, ORA artists will be featured in a permanent, rotating series of exhibits there, starting in January.The first of these exhibits will feature three artists: Laura Joy Fendel, Susan Kuznitsky, and Sabina Wohlfeiler. You will see their beautiful work in the glass display cases in the foyer leading to the Sanctuary.

Every few months, we will mount a new exhibit. In April, our exhibit will feature a sampling of all of our members' art work.

Our hope is to kick off each new exhibit at Neveh Shalom's monthly First-Friday Shabbat Service. The first one will take place on Friday evening, January 7, 2011. Services begin at 6:15 pm.

FiberArt Exhibit

A friend and I went to see the Columbia FiberArt Guild's exhibit at Portland's Museum of Contemporary Craft today. It was very cool. A smaller exhibit than I expected, but still thoroughly enjoyable. Each of 21 artists has just one piece, and each is uniquely thought-provoking. Our own Laura Joy Fendel has a moving fabric construction with Hebrew text, and my guest was so impressed that I "know the artist."

If you haven't seen this exhibit yet, you've gotta move fast! It's only there till this Saturday. It's in the "Lab," upstairs, in conjunction with a larger exhibit focused on Books. Also, be sure to spend a few minutes in the gift Gallery downstairs to see some awesome fine craft works.

Laura Joy!

A piece by our very own Laura Joy Fendel has been selected as one of 21 to be included in a special exhibit at Portland's Museum of Contemporary Craft. The Community Showcase exhibit includes works of art by members of the Columbia FiberArts Guild, exploring the theme of "text." Laura's piece is a fabric sculpture with Marcia Falk's version of the Hebrew "Modeh Ani" blessing. The exhibition lasts through December 4th.

Today was our 5th annual Celebration of Art! It was a wonderful success! And we raised some serious money for a good cause, Kehillah Housing.

There are many people to thank... our hard-working members, awesome guest artists, event coordinator, generous musicians, supportive customers, MJCC, and the army of dedicated husbands, parents, kids and friends who helped make this event beautiful and successful.

To be honest, I am too tired to start naming names right now, but wanted to say immediately that we are incredibly grateful to all the people who help make this show possible. We celebrate you!

SABINA WOHFEILER: Painter

This will be Sabina's 5th ORA art show. She also participates in an annual show at the Japanese gardens. Sabina recently commented: "I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone....using acrylics but aiming to achieve some of the same qualities as I can with watercolor."

When you see her work you won't sense any discomfort. Sabina blossoms along with her flowers. She knows how to see them and translate the deeper and more mysterious beauty most of us fail to notice.

Sabina loves to travel. She takes many trips and explores nature at every opportunity but ultimately, she joyously returns to her garden....and there she paints. Yes, Sabina paints beautiful portraits and other subjects, but again and again she returns to her flowers. (pictured: pale tulip)

Four new acrylics will be featured among her beautiful water colors in this year's offerings. Stop by her booth and schmooze a little, then absorb what she has done, and then buy a painting....a little spring garden for your winter walls!

Last night Diane Fredgant and Eddy Shuldman made the trek to the Couve...aka Vancouver Washington. Vancouver Hadassah women and some husbands made up the audience as the two ORA artists talked about how their art work is inspired and created. It was a delightful evening... a great audience!

Pictured above, is Diane talking about her work in crafting custom designed tallitot. Her skill is balanced by her humility. The audience was wowed!

Eddy Shuldman, the "Life" of ORA

Eddy Shuldman, co-founder of ORA, creates inspiring works of art in glass. From whimsy to abiding faith, many of life's themes find expression in her colorful fused glass creations.

She comments on the creative process: "Glass is magic! Hebrew letters often dance across a fanciful screen in my mind's eye. Translating this dance of letters and images into glass becomes a meditative experience. I journey deeper into the meanings and fight the limitations that a solid, yet fragile medium offers me."

Eddy is the driving force behind ORA, and the creator of Portland's highly acclaimed Jewish Arts Month. Her energy and optimism are visible in everything she does. Come meet this human dynamo, and be inspired by her artwork!

Esther Liberman makes it clear that excellence is in the details. Her beadwork is precise, creative and beautiful. Esther is a co-founder of ORA and her presence is felt in every activity this organization does!
She is our webmaven (see for yourself!- http://www.northwestjewishartists.org/), she is the group treasurer, and she represents ORA on the Jewish Arts Month Board.
Esther's beadwork ranges from spiritual work including judaica items like yahrzeit candle holders, mezuzot and chamsahs . Native american themes are expressed as well as her passion for play. Mahjong bracelets and free form items will cause you to wonder....how does she do that?

Laura Joy Fendel- Fabric Sculptor

When Laura Joy Fendel retired from teaching she simply redirected her creativity and became an interior decorator. When she couldn't find the right accent pieces for her clients she began creating them herself.

A founding member of ORA: Northwest Jewish Artists, fabric art is redefined in Laura Joy's hands. Using numerous quilting, sewing and sculpting techniques, her art transforms mere fabric into architectural sculptures. Her sense of color and patterning is remarkable.

Shemaya has used the expressive arts for healing and personal growth since the 1980s. In 1990, she first learned Touch Drawing and felt able to express herself completely for the first time in her life. Touch Drawing has become her passion, primarily because of its accessibility and unlimited applications. She has used it in her social work practice in many contexts, including with people and their families facing life threatening illnesses, as well as to inspire creativity and self discovery, to express feelings when there are no words, and for simple connection and relaxation.

Description: Touch drawing provides a doorway to creativity where each drawing

As simple as finger painting, hands become the paintbrush and images pour through your fingers. This process has been used with people who believe they are not creative, as well as with artists of all ages and all physical and cognitive abilities. Paper is placed over an inked surface and hands are the tools making the images. Uncensored, organic forms emerge from inner sensations, and each drawing captures the present moment, becoming a stepping stone to the next.

For 30 + years, art, people, food, photography and Oregon have inspired my creativity daily. Art has played a large part in my life from childhood and I can only imagine until the day I die.

Art was something I gravitated towards in school because there were no wrong answers. Art was a friendly refuge from the anxiety of my education.

Over the years I have used acrylics on glass, oil on canvas, as well as ceramic pottery and tile work.

My studio is in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
